Based on Mother Theresa's words: “the fruit of love is service,” the FUNDACIÓN JESÚS VIVE EN EL NECESITADO was created to help the destitute by giving them spiritual and material support in order to supply their needs and mitigate their necessities.

In 1999, its founder Gabriela Beeche, inspired by her love to Jesus, decided to walk by the slums in the city of San José, Capital City of Costa Rica, and by the provinces and indigenous communities in order to sense our people's real way of life. During these visits she met families who lived in subhuman conditions; some of them just ate twice or three times a week. Moreover, they live in humble houses made of rusted zinc sheets, so that water filtration is constant in the rainy season. Such precarious construction increases health problems such as bronchitis, asthma, and allergies, among others. At the same time, a great amount of these houses do not have toilets, so people have to defecate in plastic bags.

Due to their extreme poverty conditions, kids work as hucksters or pick coffee in order to get some money for their family's maintenance. Therefore, school abandonment and sexual abuse increase among these kids.

The lack of medical insurance also affects; it is impossible for them to have access to medical services and treatments for special diseases.

Touched by the deplorable living conditions of many families in our country, Mrs. Beeche looked for people who could give support to this charity project, giving assistance to our brethren. In this way, she started to distribute to the needy monthly food, strugling against hunger, which was priority number one.

Through the years, the Foundation has been spreading around and has supplied other basic needs to people in bad conditions. For instance, JESUS VIVE EN EL NECESITADO has given student scholarships. Moreover, by means of the BANHVI (the Costa Rican institution for housing welfare) it has donated houses. Besides, this Foundation has been able to move families who have been exposed to great dangers (such as: drug sales, presence of rodents in the houses, and soil floors which cause damage to kids when they walk barefoot), to other places and pay their rents while they wait for a donated-new house.

With the purpose of improving the organization's mission, the founder looked for spiritual support and asked Father Víctor Julio Porras, current Parish Priest of the Parish Church La Merced, in the capital of our country, for guidance.

The Foundation, lead by Mrs. Beeche, was legally constituted in 2002.
